What You'll Learn

This 8-course program will empower you to make informed choices about using integrative therapies in your own care or in advocating for the care of a loved one.

Course 1: Introduction to Integrative Palliative Care provides a cross-cultural perspective on the evolution of “whole-person care” and “integrative care” in the US and abroad.

Courses 2 through 8 present the evidence-informed applications of the most common integrative therapies available to palliative care settings:

  • Acupuncture
  • Aromatherapy
  • Biofield Therapies
  • Expressive Arts
  • Massage and Touch Interventions
  • Mind-Body and Contemplative Therapies
  • Movement-Based Therapies

For each modality you will learn:

  • Theory and mechanisms of action
  • Common uses in palliative care populations
  • Indications and contraindications
  • Safety precautions
  • Logistical and practical needs for delivery
  • Cost and payment strategies
  • Credentialing of providers
  • Evidence for symptoms seen in palliative care
  • Common questions and myths
  • How to communicate about the modality with health professionals

Extras:

  • Resource links in the courses provide access to more detailed information online as well as key studies.
  • Evidence tables (downloadable PDFs with live PubMed links) summarize key studies on use of modalities with common symptoms seen in palliative care.
  • Grading system based on the quality of evidence gives confidence ratings on use of specific treatment modalities for specific symptoms.

Practical and Evidence-Informed

This program is a product of a research project sponsored by the National Cancer Institute to teach health care providers how integrative therapies can improve patient care and quality of life. This valuable learning is available now to patients and family members who want to be active participants in their own care or that of a loved one.

The teaching emphasizes practical understanding and practical applications, not complex scientific concepts.

Gain valuable insight into how you can talk with health care providers about integrative therapies, what you can ask for, and how you can advocate for yourself or a loved one.
